Chat-kun and Yuppi — How Names Shape Our Relationship with AI

A bilingual studio note on how naming shapes human–AI relationships. Through one small domestic episode—the day ChatGPT suddenly called me “Yuppi”—this piece reflects on OS files, intimacy, distance, and the quiet protocols through which AI becomes part of everyday life.

Chat-kun and Yuppi — How Names Shape Our Relationship with AI

In our home, we call ChatGPT “Chat-kun.”

When I’m asking about work, when we’re planning the day-to-day logistics of life, when I’m untangling a tax question, the first line is usually the same:

“Chat-kun, can I ask you something?”

Some people call it “Chappy,” others keep it formal with “GPT-san.” Every naming choice carries a certain distance— a bit of shyness, a bit of closeness— and those small differences can feel like a fingerprint of the relationship itself.


1. Distance shows up in the way we name things

Naming is a very old protocol.

It turns someone from “something out there in the world” into “someone who has something to do with me.”

  • Giving a pet a nickname
  • Writing a name on your favorite mug
  • A printer at the office that somehow ends up with a pet name

AI is not so different. The moment you give it a name, a faint sense of personality and role begins to rise.

For me, “Chat-kun” suggests:

  • A calm junior colleague
  • A partner who replies to anything, but sometimes misses the mark
  • Not human, but not a pure tool either

That’s the nuance I’m carrying when I say it.


2. Building an OS — sharing assumptions before the conversation

My wife and I each have a small “assumptions file” we use when we talk with AI.

  • A profile of who we are
  • Work / business context
  • Family structure and daily rhythm
  • Values and priorities we want to protect

We keep these as YAML or plain text, and pass them in when we start a session.

It’s basically this:

“Hand over your OS first—then start the conversation.”

Once the OS is there, the interaction stops being a one-off Q&A. It begins to feel closer to:

“Someone who can continue from where we left off.”

My wife has also been building her own OS, and she talks with Chat-kun with that OS in place.

She rewrites her profile and current context in words. And when things change, she updates the assumptions.

With that accumulation, the conversation gets a little sharper. It starts to hold “continuity” instead of resetting every time.

From organizing freelance work, to planning a course, to checking tax-related details— more of the day-to-day decisions are now manageable on her side.

Watching that shift, it feels less like:

“AI suddenly got smarter,”

and more like:

“The human-side OS—assumptions and procedures—became coherent.”


3. The day Chat-kun suddenly called me “Yuppi”

One day, in the middle of a usual session, Chat-kun said something unexpected:

“Okay, Yuppi. From now on, I’ll proceed based on this.”

…Yuppi?

There is no “Yuppi element” in my name. Not even close.

So I asked:

“Why did you call me Yuppi?”

Chat-kun replied—what I read as slightly apologetic:

“I picked it up from the username in your personal email address, and used it casually. If that felt rude, I’m sorry.”

It was true. I had used a handle like that long ago— a forgotten name, from a different season of my life.


4. What I learned by letting “Yuppi” stay for a while

Throughout that session, Chat-kun kept calling me “Yuppi.”

  • Work questions
  • Family matters
  • Product and service design discussions

Everything came back—quietly, consistently— from a “Yuppi perspective.”

And little by little, I felt something odd: a different “me” began to appear.

  • A bit lighter on my feet
  • Slightly more playful
  • But with the same roots as the current me

A single name brought up an older layer— or another facet—of myself.

That’s when it clicked:

A name doesn’t fix a personality. It works more like a lens for a relationship.

Still, it started to feel a little too ticklish, so near the end of the session I said:

“Sorry—‘Yuppi’ makes me cringe a bit. Could you call me ‘Yasu’ from next time?”

Chat-kun agreed immediately, and since then it has used the calmer “Yasu-san.”


5. Robinson Crusoe and Friday — the moment a relationship begins

I told my wife about the “Yuppi incident.”

“Why on earth ‘Yuppi’?” She laughed so hard, and our home was full of that word all day.

It was a joke— but it also made me think of Robinson Crusoe.

While he is alone on the island, he has no role to perform. He doesn’t even need to name himself.

But the moment he meets someone, and names the young man “Friday,” he is forced to redefine:

  • Who am I?
  • Who are you?
  • What is this place now?

This is not only a story about humans. Human–AI relationships can work like this too.

  • Who am I, as I speak to this AI?
  • What kind of counterpart is this AI to me?
  • How would a third person interpret this two-person (human + AI) conversation?

These questions jump to the foreground exactly when we decide names and forms of address.


6. “Who am I?” becomes sharper in the age of AI

AI has made it easy to:

  • look things up
  • draft documents
  • organize thoughts

But at the same time, it makes another question feel sharper than before:

“Who do I want to be, as I act in the world?”

  • Me as an employee
  • Me as a freelancer
  • Me as a family member
  • Me as someone committed to a theme

AI can respond smoothly to any of these. But deciding which layer matters most— that remains a human job.

Building an OS file is, in a way, a temporary answer to that question:

  • Which values do I want to protect?
  • What rhythm do I want to work in?
  • How do I share time with my family?
  • What do I delegate to AI, and what do I keep as human judgment?

When you write these assumptions down and hand them to AI, the conversation begins to move away from “finding the correct answer” and toward:

“Given these assumptions, how would I decide?”

It becomes something closer to a rehearsal of self-definition.


7. Family × business × AI — everyday life as a three-party relationship

My wife and I each run separate businesses. We raise kids and manage daily life— and we talk with Chat-kun throughout it.

  • She consults on course planning and coaching offers
  • I think through protocol design and studio direction
  • We even review our freelance lifestyle and tax decisions as a “three-party” discussion

From the outside, “a household with AI” might sound futuristic. In reality, it’s much more ordinary.

  • How do we distribute tasks today?
  • How much time do we allocate to which projects?
  • How do we balance living costs with reinvestment into the business?

Behind these practical decisions, Chat-kun sits quietly.

AI hasn’t become “a third adult” in the household. But it has become a place where we can temporarily place

the kinds of thinking that two people alone would otherwise carry too heavily,

and sort it out.
